Written by Ray Whitley, it was originally released in 1964 and reached number 41 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 10 on the R&B chart. It later became a favourite on the Northern soul scene in the UK, belatedly reaching number one on the UK Singles Chart for three weeks in September 1971. The single was also number one on the Irish Singles Chart, for one week, the same month. The group appeared on BBC's Top of the Pops with the song on. The Tams were an American vocal group from Atlanta, Georgia, whom enjoyed their greatest success in the 1960s, and the 1970s, and most improbably in the 1980s. They were originally formed in 1952, as the Four Dots, but they took their long lasting name from the Tam O'Shanter style hat that the group choose to wear on stage. Although such an early origin suggests longevity, it was not until 1960 that the group finally emerged with a single on Swan Records. The Tams, led by the gravel-tinged voice of Joseph Pope, were one of the most consistent of 1960s pop-soul groups, and have been long overdue for a critical reappraisal. Beginning with Untie Me written by Joe South in 1962, the Tams hit the charts at intervals with What Kind of Fool Do You Think I Am in 1963, Hey Girl Don't Bother Me in 1964, and the sublime Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy in 1968.
