It was one of Joplin's early works, and became the model for ragtime compositions by subsequent composers. It is one of the most famous of all ragtime pieces. As a result, Joplin became dubbed the King of Ragtime by his contemporaries. The piece gave Joplin a steady if unspectacular income for the rest of his life. Album 2016 1 Song. Maple Leaf Rag is a multi-strain ragtime march with athletic bass lines and upbeat melodies. Each of the four parts features a recurring theme and a striding bass line with copious seventh chords. Published in 1899, Maple Leaf Rag was not an immediate hit. It wasn't until 1907 that two recorded versions of it sold a modest number of copiesone by the U. Marine Band and the other by Vess L. Scott Joplin - Solace. Maple Leaf Rag was published between August 10 and September 20, 1899, the latter being the date the score was received by the Copyright Office. It made Joplin's name, his future works would be prefixed as by the composer of the Maple Leaf Rag. On August 10, 1900, Joplin signed a contract which gave him a one cent per copy royalty, which would be extremely profitable for both him and his estate. Though he died in 1917, Maple Leaf Rag was recorded no less than six times in the 1920s. There is also at least one recording extant of Joplin playing the piece.
