Album
Sonny's Dream Birth of the New Cool is an album by saxophonist Sonny Criss recorded in 1968 and released on the Prestige label. The arrangements are challenging but complementary to Criss' style, and he is in top form on the six Tapscott originals. highly recommended for both Criss' playing and Tapscott's writing. Alto saxophonist William Sonny Criss was an anomaly of the jazz musicians who came up during the bebop era. He signed with Prestige in 1965 and issued a host of fine recordings, This Is Criss and Sonny's Dream among them. For Sonny Criss this was an unusual date. The altoist is backed for the set by a nonet arranged by the great Los Angeles legend Horace Tapscott. The CD reissue includes two additional alternate takes, and is highly recommended for both Criss' playing and Tapscott's writing.
