Rank is the only live album by English band the Smiths. It was released in September 1988 by their British record company Rough Trade, and reached No. 2 in the British charts. In the United States, the album was released on Sire Records and made No. Rank was released as a contractual obligation. It was recorded almost two years earlier on 23 October 1986 at National Ballroom in Kilburn, London, and is a fourteen-track distillation of 21 songs by singer Morrissey from the complete concert. The Smiths The Smiths were together for a little over five years, and their career moved at such incredible speed, even they sometimes struggled to keep up. This is very much the story of their debut album. Originally recorded with producer Troy Tate, Morrissey and Rough Trade were underwhelmed by what they heard and hired John Porter to fix it, who felt the albums problems were so severe that it should be re-recorded from scratch. For many Smiths fans, Rank is as close as they will get to a live performance from Morrissey, Johnny Marr, and company. Recorded live at The National Ballroom in London in October of 1986, roughly six months before they disbanded altogether, these 14 songs capture the Smiths performing in full-on rock-star mode. Though Grant Showbiz's production and engineering work consistently places Morrissey's voice too loud in respect to the rest of the band, the performance is suitably epic, hit-packed, and engrossing. Long live the Smiths Here they are in full effect, six months before waving goodbye, live in London, in Smiths' live album Rank was originally given a DAT release, but as legend has it DAT copies were eventually pulled by the label and presumably destroyed. EIL, a record shop specializing in rarities, recently managed to get a hold of a copy of Rank on DAT and it's up for grabs. According to EIL, there are reportedly only 50 copies of Rank on DAT in circulation the copy they acquired has remained boxed since manufacture and has never been played.
