Looking back on alternative music of the late 90s, its really easy to conflate S words like Sugar Ray, swing, Smash Mouth, Squirrel Nut Zippers, and ska. On the surface, these shiny-happy genres and stupidly named bands symbolize the frivolity of the Clinton years - a time when bowling shirts and frosted tips were totally acceptable and the biggest issue dividing the nation was Dawson vs. Lets Face It was actually the Bosstones third major-label album. Theyd been signed by Mercury in the early 90s, at the dawn of the alternative era. As grungy guitar bands ruled the scene, the Bosstones bided their time until ska was ready for its close-up. Well it's so hard to face That in this day and age Somebody's race can trigger somebody's rage And somebody's preference Can drive some total stranger To make somebody somehow feel the wrath of their anger. Why were we put here What for We're unsure We sure weren't put here to hate Be racist, be sexist Be bigots, be sure We won't stand for your hate. It's the Bosstones album most inspired by the British Two-Tone movement of the early '80s, when pop melodies and pleas for tolerance and equality were often as important as the grooves - and that's certainly the case here, as the band turns in probably their most substantive set of lyrics to date. Since the band's inception, lead vocalist Dicky Barrett, bassist Joe Gittleman, tenor saxophonist Tim Johnny Vegas Burton and dancer Bosstone Ben Carr have remained constant members. The line-up also includes drummer Joe Sirois, saxophonist Leon Silva, guitarist Lawrence Katz and trombonist Chris Rhodes. They reached their commercial peak with their platinum-selling 1997 album Let's Face It and its hit single The Impression That I Get
