The Limeliters are a folk music group formed in July 1959 by Lou Gottlieb bass, Alex Hassilev baritone, and Glenn Yarbrough tenor. The group was active from 1959 until 1965, when they disbanded. After a hiatus of sixteen years Yarbrough, Hassilev, and Gottlieb reunited and began performing as The Limeliters again. Alive in Concert, Volume 1 was recorded in Atlanta and released in 1982. The lineup at this point consisted of Gottlieb, Hassilve, and Grammer, with accompanist John David. Grammer's Irish tenor voice faked me out the first time I heard this album into thinking it was still Yarbrough and the original lineup. With Gottlieb's comic introduction it is the quintessential track on the album. Also standing out are a cover of Harry Chapin's Circle, the a cappella harmony of South Bound Passenger Train, and the sing along of Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream. The Limeliters' album Tonight: In Person reached number 5 on Billboard in 1961, and was on the U. charts for 74 weeks. The reissue in 1961 of their earlier Elektra album made the top 40 and spent 18 weeks on the charts. Their third release, The Slightly Fabulous Limeliters, made the top ten in the same year, charting for 36 weeks.
