The only element of The Free Association that I'm not entirely convinced by is Phillipson's singing, which can be too vague and jazzy at times. At their best, her vocals recall Fontella Bass's work with the Art Ensemble of Chicago, though some of these tracks require a little more melodic definition than her extemporised cool provides. The Association is an American sunshine pop band from California. During the late 1960s, the band had numerous hits at or near the top of the Billboard charts including Windy, Cherish, Never My Love and Along Comes Mary and were the lead-off band at 1967's Monterey Pop Festival. They are known for intricate vocal harmonies by the band's multiple singers. The American Libraries collection includes material contributed from across the United States. The Free Association are difficult to categorise. Fans of Holmes's soundtrack work will see view this record as a great musical stylist finding his niche. After listening to the Free Association on 'Come Get It I Got It' and the rocky and quite experimental nature of the music I was surprised at the quality of the music off this album. From the opening track 'I don't rhyme no mo', a great slice of dirty Hip-hop to the track that basically a remix of one off CGIIGI but is ten times better
