The L. Four or The L. 4 was a jazz quartet that performed in Los Angeles, California, from 1974 to 1982. Its members were guitarist Laurindo Almeida, saxophonist and flutist Bud Shank, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Shelly Manne, replaced by Jeff Hamilton after 1977. They performed a mixture of straight-ahead jazz on the cool side, influenced by European Classical music, and bossa nova and samba Almeida was born in Brazil. They recorded ten albums before disbanding. Chuck Flores was the. A 4 Scores - The L. Shank and Almeida came together 20 years later to form the L. Four, a quartet also including bassist Ray Brown and drummer Shelly Manne. Their debut recording as a unit was made at the 1974 Concord Jazz Festival, and it finds the appealing musicians blending together well on bossa nova tunes including Manha de Carnaval, Almeida's classical-oriented originals, and some swing. This album was recorded at the Concord jazz festival in 1975 & at that time they were a new group. A lot of the tunes they do are Latin-American, thus the presence of Almeida on classical guitar.
