Totally low keyed and bop oriented, As We Were Saying … swings from the get-go, sounding fresh, intoxicating, and exciting. Here we find the three Heath Brothers sitting down at the same table, and they’re joined by the likes of Stanley Cowell on piano, Sir Roland Hanna on piano, Jon Faddis on trumpet, Slide Hampton trombone, Mark Elf on guitar, and Mames Mtume [Jimmy’s son] holding down additional percussions. Now, these three legends have played with other legends, including Monk, Miles, Trane, Dizzy, Herbie, Lateef, and dozens of others. With all of this indicating that the album’s title, As We Were Saying … bespeaks the many interruptions these cats have had over the years, and are now finally being able to set aside other interests and finish their musical saga; and what a delight it is to hear them back together again.

The Heath Brothers have learned their trade from time on the road, talking music, and creating their own atmosphere. The Brothers’ tone is cool, filled with imagination and harmony, getting their ideas and music across without handicapping themselves by using thousands of notes that are unnecessary, seeming to bring forth a stream of continuity and consciousness that is strikingly eloquent and up to date, where they create a memorable outing that will not rattle the walls, but will roll around in your head like a big ol’ fashioned happily smiling full moon.
