Mapenzi is a studio album by American jazz musician Harold Land and Blue Mitchell quintet. The album was released in 1977 by Concord label. All compositions by Harold Land except as indicated. Starting in 1975, Land and trumpeter Blue Mitchell worked regularly in a quintet up until Mitchell's death in 1979, but this album was just about their only joint recording. With keyboardist Kirk Lightsey, bassist Reggie Johnson, and drummer Al Tootie Heath offering solid support, the group performs four originals by Land including the title cut and Rapture, two songs by Lightsey, and Mitchell's Blue Silver. If you like Blue Mitchell, another album Blue appeared on later in his life but when was still filled with power and vigor around the same time as this album is Rain Check by Louie Bellson also very highly recommended. These albums are wonderful because they hit a sweet spot where maturity gained from years of experience is combined with a still vigorous physical ability. Sometimes recordings made later in an artist's career show that the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.
