The Friends of Distinction were an American vocal group best known for their late 1960s hits, Grazing in the Grass, Love or Let Me Be Lonely, and Going in Circles. Founded by Harry Elston and Floyd Butler, The Friends of Distinction also included Jessica Cleaves and Barbara Jean Love, who was replaced by Charlene Gibson during her pregnancy. One of the most likeable and vocally cohesive singing groups of the late 60s and early 70s, the Friends of Distinction are too often forgotten in retrospectives of that era, but their music has continued to live on. Formed by Harry Elston, Floyd Butler, Jessica Cleaves and Barbara Love in 1968, the group had a relatively short life in its original incarnation, but made some of the most memorable popsoul music of all time. Highly Distinct is close to their debut album but lacked the obvious hit it's more jazzy and less R&B. They're mesmerizing on We Got a Good Thing Going, where their four-part harmonies riding the bubbling arrangement is simply delicious. I've yet to hear a bad rendition of Neil Sedaka's lilting Working on a Groovy Thing, and the Friends version, with their impeccable harmonies, is one of the best it should have made their Best Of CD.
