With a Little Help from My Fwends is the second main album of the Fwends series by American rock band the Flaming Lips. It is a track-for-track tribute to the Beatles album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. It was released on October 27, 2014, through Warner Bros. All proceeds from record sales will go to the Bella Foundation, an organization in Oklahoma City that helps provide veterinary care to pet owners in need. But the Lips and Fwends go to town on these songs with little regard for thematic resonance or big-picture atmosphere. In the spirit of the aforementioned 80s-era indie cover-song desecrations, these arent so much revisions as disembowelments that replace the guts of the originals with a tangle of short-circuiting exposed wires. With its scatterbrained, kinder-pop take on the title track which climaxes with an arrhythmic, atonal guitar solo from J. Mascis, and a strangulated call-and-response between Wilco offshoot the Autumn Defense and Lightning Bolts Brian Chippendale aka Black Pus on With a Little Help From My Friends , the project effectively gives Sgt. So when the Flaming Lips announced they were delivering a start-to-finish Sgt. Pepper's covers album, it was impossible not to be curious. This isn't their first time tackling a sacred cow. The Lips covered Pink Floyd's entire Dark Side of the Moon album in 2009 and followed it with similar homages to the classic debuts from King Crimson and the Stones Roses. But covering a Beatles record - much less Pepper's - requires another level of moxie entirely. Fortunately, Wayne Coyne and his bandmates have always operated on instinct, not fear.
