It was publicised as a long-lost collection of recordings by a late 1960s group, but actually consisted of new tracks recorded by Andy Partridge, Colin Moulding, and Dave Gregory of XTC with Gregory's brother Ian. Joined by XTC member Dave Gregory's brother Ian on drums, the Dukes indulged in the stylistic tropes of 1960s psychedelia, particularly the British variety. Several of the tracks were made to sound like individual bands like the Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd sound of Bike Ride to the Moon. Ape House Ltd. The first EP, 25 O'Clock, shipped on April Fools' Day 1985, and it was rumored at the time and official not long after that the Dukes of Stratosphear were really XTC- with Partridge and Moulding as Sir John Johns and the Red Curtain, third member David Gregory taking the nom de hoax Lord Cornelius Plum, and David's brother Ian. The Dukes of Stratosphear anticipated and were celebrated by retro-minded movements such as the Paisley Underground. Because we felt like they were laughing at us Lets see you try to make a record for that much. We should have just drunk the change, to be honest, but it was a kind of fuck-you. Heres your change, and heres your album. And it sold very well, so there was more budget to go around on the second one. 25 OClock Q&A. Producers The Dukes of Stratosphear & John Leckie. Not in this case though. 25 O'Clock bristles with enthusiasm and energy, positively exuding good, and let's be honest here, wacky vibes. Released on April Fool's Day 1985 under the Dukes' pseudonym, it actually outsold their last album proper, The Big Express. Indeed, its influence can clearly be heard on straighter albums such as Tears For Fears' 1989 work, The Seeds Of Love
