Crazy People and Bedlam have been the subjects of some busy conjecture by various 1960s Sherlock Holmes types, and several theories regarding the album's genesis have been proposed throughout the Johnny Kitchen Presents The Crazy People - The Crazy People. This is one of those albums that won't make sense to most, unless you understand and know about the producer/creator/svengali behind this LP, Johnny Kitchen. Kitchen had a deal worked out with the small Canadian label Condor, where, for a flat one-time fee, he would provide the label with something like a dozen (or around that) LP's worth of material - the thing was, the albums he provided the company consisted of either unknown tapes he found of musicians that never made it and/or flat-out re-titlings of LP's that had been released in the States but went under the radar. Often he would cut various tapes together, creating what amounted to sound collages (like this LP), with bits of one song starting in one place, and being interrupted by another song.

Most of the music on this LP is based around an (unknown) rock group (possibly from Canada?), with their songs being mixed with various spoken segments, assorted music that Kitchen found on discarded tapes, and short spoken loops by the one Wild Man Fischer (it's interesting to point out that Fisher's contribution took place before his LP was issued ("Bedlam" came out in 1968, while Fisher's double-album set came out in 1969).

Essentially a tax-scam LP (or at least in the tax-scam family), to me, the LP is a work of art, albeit one that was largely accidental (Kitchen was in it for a quick buck), and winds up being quite an experimental LP. I wouldn't recommend it to psych fans, as it's not really psychedelic in the common sense; rather I think those with far-reaching musical tastes outside of psych and/or rock would rather enjoy this (esp. if you like stuff like Negativland, for example).

Now, onto the CD review. The Gear Fab remaster (which is the only reissue of this album), is quite good - it's worth nothing that this is a short album (+/- 30 minutes). The liner notes have some misinformation, but it's hard to fault the label for this, as Kitchen remained an elusive and untrackable figure until a few years after the reissue (for example, one theory provided in the liner notes is that Wild Man Fisher was Johnny Kitchen!).

As for Kitchen, he continued to be involved in the tax-scam LP world until the mid-70's, and has been involved in several dozen LP's from the mid-60's until around 1977 (or so).

One final thing: the third track "Raunchy Boog-A-Loo" is a quite good boogaloo track (funk and latin heads will dig this), which makes me wonder if it was taken from an unknown 45, unreleased tapes, or was 'clipped' off an LP? If anyone knows if this was ever issued (pre-Kitchen mangling, that is) as a 45 or on an LP, please respond.
