The Blue Things also known as The Bluethings were a folk-rock and, later, psychedelic band from Hays, Kansas that existed from 1964 to 1968, recording one LP and several singles for RCA Records in '66 and '67. The RCA recordings remain their best-known material, although they had previously released singles through Ruff Records, a tiny Texas label. Today the Blue Things are remembered as one of the best bands to come out of the Midwest in the 60's, although they were unheard of outside of the. All of this material, except the final 1967 single recorded after the departure of Val Stecklein, has been reissued in some form on other releases. Blue Things. How interband conflict, a cheap Beach Boys comp, Ric Ocaseks ear for a hit and more played into Weezers 1994 alt-rock masterpiece. While on tour with Weezer to promote the Blue Album, Cuomo started intensely listening to soundtracks of musical theater productions like Jesus Christ Superstar and Les Misérables. Intrigued by the marriage of music and narrative, he ventured to create his own, using a fictional plot line to grapple with his very real feelings of insecurity and confusion that surfaced as a result of his sudden fame. Along with the Remains, the Blue Things are serious contenders for the title of the Great Lost Mid-'60s American Band. The Kansas group was extremely popular in the Midwest and Texas, but remained unknown on a national level, despite a deal with RCA. Piloted by the songwriting of singer and guitarist Val Stecklein, the group often sounded like a cross between the Byrds and the Beau Brummels with their melodic, energetic, guitar-oriented folk-rock and haunting harmonies
