For me this cd is a absolute gem of a find and upon repeated listens this album improves greatly. some sublime music is on offer here. i purchase 100's of cd's a year so for this to be one of the albums of that year is praise indeed. a must have for any fans of the black dogs previous work, a shame its hard to find now

Tracks are too short, end prematurely, and sound unfinished. Most of them are just average, nothing special.

The Black Dog moves past their original IDM for something new and just as exciting with SILENCED. The strange melodies are still there, as "Trojan Horus (Part 1)" hints at the Middle Eastern sources, while "Trojan Horus (Part 2)" brings in electro punctuated with vocal chops. "Lam Vril" drifts along like a soundtrack for a post-modern Antonioni film, while "Remote Viewing" gets seriously funky, with a huge melodic break in its middle. But they also excel when they venture into darker territory, like the mysterious "Truth Benders D.I.E" or the deep, military-dirge of "Drexian City R.I.D.E" or the short, but affecting "Machine Machina" and "The Stele of Revealing." But rather than all doom-and-gloom, "Gummi Void" has a brighter tinge to it, and "4 3s 555" duo takes the album out on a more ambient note. The Black Dog is ever-expanding an ever-intriguing.

As a big fan of the early Black Dog material, I've always been skeptic of new releases by Downie. It always ended up being a let down when compared to the Handley/Turner/Downie material. However, upon hearing the samples of Silenced, I decided to buy it and give him another chance. And what a suprise it is! This is a rare return to form, in the best way possible. Although different then the Bytes and Spanners era, there is definitely a classic feel all the songs. Much more laid back than old BD, but with the same ancient melodic feel throughout the album(to name a few "Alt/Return/Dash/Kill", "Remote Viewing", "Machine Machina"). I highly recommend fans of Black Dog and even Plaid check this out immediately. One of my top 10 for 2005.

These Dust guys seem to have guided Ken back to "the path". He's not doing the Brian Eno thing, he's not doing the William S. Burroughs thing, he's doing The Black Dog thing. A very cohesive record where everything comes together as one in the real "album" sense. It works in the way that Underworld: Second Toughest in the Infants or My Bloody Valentine: Loveless does. You put it on at any point in the record and don't notice when you've gone into the next track because its just all one thing. A very good record.

So good to hear The Black Dog back on form. Wonderful production, gets better on each listen. At a time when Plaid seem to be running out of ideas, it looks like Ken's sound is standing the test of time much better than his former band colleagues. Well worth a listen.

Ken Downie has produced the finest Black Dog release since the departure of Handley and Turner. "Silenced" is swirling ambient music, with a strong rhythmic bottom, that reveals itself slowly, enveloping you in a world that mostly eschews the excesses of his previous middle eastern ethno efforts for Warp and Hydrogen Dukebox. However, one of the best tracks, "Remote Viewing", has an elegantly Persian sound destined for heavy rotation. This album is so beautifully produced, almost soundtrack-like, and it's an unexpected and welcome direction. Yes, it's less experimental, but the composition is accomplished and feels more like a unified piece rather than a collection of tracks. It gives one hope that the glory days of electronica may be on the way back.
