Album
Jericho is the eighth studio album by Canadian-American rock group the Band. Coming seventeen years after their farewell concert, it was released in 1993 and was the first album to feature the latter-day configuration of the group, as well as their first release for the Rhino subsidiary Pyramid Records. Joining original members Levon Helm drumsmandolinguitarvocal, Rick Danko bassguitarvocal and Garth Hudson organkeyboardshorns were Jim Weider who had played guitar for the group from. Few bands called it quits with more fanfare than the Band when they bowed out with the 1976 all-star concert famously preserved in LP and movie form as The Last Waltz. However, while guitarist, songwriter, and de facto leader Robbie Robertson may have been ready to retire the Band, it soon became clear that the other members of the group didn't feel the same way especially Levon Helm and Rick Danko, and by 1982 a Robertson-less lineup had hit the road. Released on November 2nd, 1993, Jericho represented The Bands first album of new material since 1975s Northern Lights, Southern Cross. The album features three of the original five band members Levon Helm Rick Danko Garth Hudson as well as pianist Richard Bell, guitarist Jim Weider and drummer Randy Ciarlante. The absence of both their original lead guitarist, Robbie Robertson, and The Bands former enigmatic frontman, Richard Manual, created an unmistakable void in artistic originality within Jerichos cover-heavy set-list.
