The Art Pepper Quartet is an album by saxophonist Art Pepper featuring sessions from 1956 recorded for the Tampa label. The album was rereleased on CD on Original Jazz Classics with bonus tracks in 1994. Fine music, but not essential when one considers how many gems Art Pepper recorded during his rather hectic life. Engineer Val Pepper was an extremely troubled,unpredictable character - in and out of prison on drugs related charges - which makes it all the more remarkable that such a character could produce music of this calibre. The light touch and eloquence of his playing reminds this reviewer very much of an alto saxophone equivalent to the great Lester Young- nothing harsh or strident - everything light and melodic. The CD comes with some very meaningful words and insights from Art's beloved wifewidow - Laurie - who fought long and hard to track down and take possession of these 1956 recordings. Her word
