Allegedly the first minimalist composition out there. This recording by the versatile rock band the Styrenes takes the piece one step further, though the direction may be open to debate. Initially, this rock version kicks off with a stripped-down punk feeling, but soon develops a free-floating looseness one might associate more readily with progressive rock and ambient music comparisons with several rock styles and aesthetics are inevitable, since the Styrenes' chimerical nature is fully at play in its imaginative rendition. Terrence Mitchell Riley born June 24, 1935 is an American composer and performing musician best known as a pioneer of the minimalist school of composition. Influenced by jazz and Indian classical music, his music became notable for its innovative use of repetition, tape music techniques, and delay systems. Riley is best known for his 1964 composition In C and 1969 album A Rainbow in Curved Air, both considered landmarks of minimalism and important influences on experimental, rock, and electronic. Terry Riley's minimalist classic In C is one of those pieces that'sinstantly recognisable, despite the fact that no two performances of it can ever quantitatively be very similar. Each musician is given a sequence of 53 musical phrases. The Styrenes were formed by Paul Marotta, previously of Cleveland art punkers The Electric Eels, back in 1975. Having met Riley, he'd become convinced of the possibilities of an In C played with rock instrumentation previous recorded versions have usually featured tuned percussion and wind instruments, though held off actually doing it for some years.
