River is the third studio album by English vocalist Terry Reid. It was released in 1973 by Atlantic Records. It was produced by Tom Dowd and written by Terry Reid. Even though it has been reissued four times in the 21st century, Terry Reid's 1973 album River remains steeped in legend. His debut for Atlantic after Ahmet Ertegun freed him from the legal entanglements with former manager Mickie Most, it was begun in London with Eddy Offord, finished in Los Angeles with engineer Ed Barton, then overdubbed and mastered by Tom Dowd in Miami. Listen free to Terry Reid The Other Side Of The River Let's Go Down, Things To Try and more. 10 tracks 53:40. Terry Reid born 13 November, 1949, Huntingdon, England is a singer, songwriter and guitarist. He first appeared on the scene as a member of The Jaywalkers, who had a minor hit in 1967 with the song The Hand Don't Fit The Glove but by that time The Jaywalkers had disbanded. Soon after, Reid began a solo career, releasing his first full-length album titled Bang Bang, You're Terry Reid. Reid went on to release three more full-length albums before retiring in 1981. Come 1991, Terry Reid returned with another full-length entitled The Driver. Terry Reid turned down offers to front Led Zeppelin and recorded some flawless folk-rock albums but never escaped obscurity. This comprehensive reissue rounds out his untold story. The sound on The Other Side of the River is impeccable, but the tracks themselves are obvious rescues from a very deep vault Let's Go Down finishes with Reid cutting the track short, quipping: Do you want to have another go, or shall we end it here , which makes the fact that it sounds like a well-rounded and complete. record all the more impressive. This track is from Light In The Attic Records' release of unreleased Terry Reid tracks called The Other Side Of The River. The album is available : Terry Reid's 1973 album River was recorded twice: once with British producer Eddy Offord and then with Tom Dowd. This release features five alternate takes and six unreleased songs from those recording sessions. Buy On. Record Label: Future Days. Genres: R&B, SingerSongwriter, PopRock, Album Rock, International, Bossa Nova, Psychedelic Soul. Light years from a mere slap-dash rarities compilation, The Other Side of the River takes some of a seminal rock musician's most interesting sketchworks and reimagines them as his magnum opus. I can only write one review for Terry Reid, and I own all of his albums, and listen to none of them ... but we’ll get to that later. I first heard of Terry Reid when he opened for Cream in Philadelphia back in 1969 [?], where the day before I used the letterhead from an ATCO record memo and typed myself a three colour backstage pass, that to my surprise worked; though I got no where near any of the members of Cream. If anything, Terry Reid will be remembered as the man who declined to join Led Zeppelin, or if you look at it from the other side of the page, he was the man who got Led Zeppelin together as we now know them, and still, he managed to turn down Deep Purple in order to form his own band, which was probably a mistake. There’s no denying that the man had talent, it’s just that when he expresses that talent, he does it in an inconsistent manner, never actually defining himself, unless of course one considers that his eclecticism actually was who he was. When discussing Terry Reid it’s important to begin with his vocals, and to say the least, they are very strange, nearly feather weight, enveloped in an undercurrent of R&B, and don’t transcend well when compared to his musicianship, and the style he fashioned for his bands. His voice was almost otherworldly, nearly bursting forth, and in some odd manner reminds me of Marc Bolan, though without the fine tuning. His notes are powerful and strong, belaying a heavy blues metal attitude, yet when sided with his vocals there’s a juxtaposition that stands like a brick wall, meaning that you’re either listening to the music, or his vocals, the two don’t mesh or support each other.Terry was fond of rambling jams, consider “Superlungs” or “Season Of The Witch,” where he just doesn’t manage to do the songs justice, because the originals were far better, and if you were to stand his version of “Season Of The Witch” against that of the Super Session album with Al Kooper, Steve Stills & Mike Bloomfield, you’ll instantly wonder what Reid was thinking in the first place. Of course there’s another side of the page here also, as Aretha Franklin said in 1968 that there were only three things that ever came out of the UK musically: The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and Terry Reid. This writer may not be so sure of that, though nonetheless Terry Reid did have a raw emotion that I believe he was not able to tame, or channel into a cohesive unit. So much of his material comes off as mere studio noodling, though having said that, a strong guiding production hand might have made all the difference in the world, rather than allowing his tunes to come off as slap-dashed.Each album progresses slightly, as if over the years Terry is revealing himself, not so much to the listener, but to himself. Later works still have a rock edge, but they also have a jazzy feel to them, one that must be experienced to fully comprehend. Terry Reid for all he is or isn’t, will always remain a footnote in musical history, yet he effected many, and perhaps that’s his crowning achievement, that innate ability to transcend boundaries to the point where others pick up on what he was doing, taking the next step, refining, defining, and having much more success ... all because Terry Reid wasn’t afraid to make his own statement. So listen or don't … it matters not to me, and I'm sure it would never have mattered to Terry Reid, there's just an undefined something here that can not be cataloged or rated.Review by Jenell Kesler
Interesting if somewhat pretentious review of an unsung rock'n'roll genius. In contrast to this reviewers experience, Terry Reid, is one of the few artists from the 60's and 70's that I have never grown tired of.
This is a fascinating assessment of Terry Reid's career and talent. I respect Mr. Kesler's opinion, agree with parts and disagree too. My opinion is that he's one greatest blues vocalists ever from the U.K. He's right up there with Mike Harrison, Jess Roden and Gary Brooker, each of whom don't get the credit they deserve. It's true that his studio work is inconsistent, some songs great others not up to snuff. To see him perform powerfully live, it's clear that there was something off in the studio. I'm sure it's partially from the long period of substance abuse. I doubt he would have been a good fit with either Led Zep or Deep Purple, he was too undisciplined to last very long.I do see Mr. Kesler's point of the listeners disconnect either focusing on his voice or the music as they don't always mesh so well. That said, I still listen to him after all these years, and thank he's brilliant and tragic, what might have been if he had been able to focus his genius.
so you shit all over the rating of the PRESSING because you don't like the album? maybe you meant to write this on Amazon? the 5-star system here is for the quality of the PRESSING, not the music contained on it.
