Southern Gal is the debut album by American singer-songwriter Terry Ellis. It was released by EastWest Records on November 14, 1995. Recorded and released during the time her band En Vogue were on a two-year hiatus, the album includes the R&B Top 40 hit singles, Where Ever You Are and What Did I Do to You. En Vogue member Terry Ellis solo debut, Southern Gal, is quite similar to the records of her band. Produced by Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy, who helmed both of the En Vogue albums, Southern Gal is a smooth, commercial-oriented, hip-hop-informed, contemporary R&B album with pop leanings. Terry Ellis Terry Lynn Ellis, born September 5, 1963 in Houston, Texas, USA, is an African-American R&B singer. After receiving a degree in Marketing from Prarie View A & M University, she joined En Vogue. Terry Ellis began her musical career in 1990 as a member of For You, along with Dawn Robinson, Cindy Herron, and Maxine Jones. The group later changed its name from For You to En Vogue and recorded a parade of R&B hits. visting her alma mate, and a brief discussion with her older sister and her college band Ellis' solo album Southern Gal is a project that was probably intended to be performed with her former En Vogue bandmates. Since the group disbanded, it migt be assumed that this CD is nothing more than a vanity project or something hurriedly slapped together. Nothing could be further from the truth, and with Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy at the controls, Miss Ellis swims smoothly through funk waters, ballads and songs sprinkled with a bit of gospel flavoring.
