The Concert Fantasia in G, Op. 56, for piano and orchestra, was written by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky between June and October 1884. It was premiered in Moscow on 6 March 1885, with Sergei Taneyev as soloist and Max Erdmannsdörfer conducting. The Concert Fantasia received many performances in the first 20 years of its existence. It then disappeared from the repertoire and lay virtually unperformed for many years, but underwent a revival in the latter part of the 20th century. Hough appears to believe whole-heartedly that Tchaikovsky's three piano concertos and his Concert Fantasia are truly great works, and his belief infuses his performances with the kind of commitment they rarely receive. Too many pianists seem content to ride Tchaikovsky's stupendously difficult piano concertos to technical glory without considering that they may have musical worth as well. The quality of the recordings is first rate something we have come to take for granted from this label The detailed program notes inform the reader of the background to the writing of these pieces. Tchaikovskys first piano concerto is as much a portal into the classico-romantic landscape as Beethovens fifth symphony, or Griegs piano concerto. As a dedicated listener, you most likely have them burned deep in your consciousness, even if you forget which is which. Houghs working now becomes the one that a new generation of listeners will go through life hearing as the very thing Tchaikovsky had in mind, no matter Hough being his millionth interpreter.
