A Grain of Salt. Review by Aaron Badgley. This is not folk-rock, country-folk, or any kind of popular folk music, but pure Canadian folk in the strict sense of the word. This is the band's debut disc, and it's pretty good. The music is somewhat sparse, with minimal arrangements and instrumentation, but it works, demonstrating just how tight and talented the band is. Traditional instruments are used banjo, mandolin, spoons and the like to great effect. Perhaps the poor production quality may be distracting for some, but in reality it adds to the authenticity of their sound. When Tanglefoot formed in the early '80s, the group bore little resemblance to the version that audiences see now. Schoolteachers Joe Grant, Bob Wagar, and Tim Rowat used to wear period costumes as they sang old traditional standards and their audien. read more. tanglefootde Albums. Tanglefoot's lineup from 2007 on was: Steve Ritchie guitar and whistle, the band's longest-serving member, Al Parrish double bass, Terry Young multi-instrumentalist incl guitar, mandolin, banjo, harmonica, whistle, Sandra Swannell fiddle and viola, and Rob Ritchie piano, returning after a five-year hiatus to replace departing pianist Bryan Weirmier.
