Rimsky-Korsakov, a contemporary of Taneyev, was largely self-taught and produces a much more rustic, folk-like atmosphere in his composition. Mordkovitch does an equally admirable job here of delivering a spirited, pleasantly nuanced performance. Sound quality and balance between soloist and orchestra are excellent throughout. Rimsky-Korsakov's Fantasy on Russian Themes is less well known than the work it led to. A composer of very Russian inspiration, Taneyev all his life was dogged by claims that his music sounded German, because many of his contemporaries bought into the nationalist myth that all musical learning was, in fact, German. He was even referred to as the Russian Brahms, despite heartily loathing the Hamburg-born composer's music and methods. Taneyev - like his mentor, Tchaikovsky - looked to the Austro-German tradition from Bach to Beethoven for his models, while Rimsky found his sources farther east, in the folk music of Russia and central Asia, and in 1887 he composed a work for violin and orchestra that was a Fantasy on Russian Themes.
