Sweeney's Men was an Irish traditional band. They emerged from the mid-1960s Irish roots revival, along with groups such as The Dubliners and the Clancy Brothers. The founding line-up in May 1966 was Johnny Moynihan, Andy Irvine and Galway Joe Dolan. Before creating the band in 1966, Irvine, Moynihan and Dolan had met in Dublin and had performed and travelled together, on and off, around Ireland Irvine and Dolan hitch-hiked together around Europe Munich, Vienna and Rome in late 1965. Sweeney's Men is an album by Sweeney's Men, recorded in early 1968 after 'Galway Joe' Dolan had left the band and been replaced by Terry Woods. Johnny Moynihan contributed Rattlin' Roarin' Willy-a song written by Robbie Burns and set to the slip jig rhythm 98-and also Pecker Dunne's Sullivan John, which had previously been sung by Dolan before he left the band. 75 Moynihan also sang Dicey Riley and The Handsome Cabin Boy, which he learnt from the singing of A. Still, it's a rather average Irish folk record, with just one original song Terry Woods' My Dearest Dear, and less striking to audiences of subsequent decades than it might have been at the time. Jigs, a cappella songs, and somewhat earthy folk on The Handsome Cabin Boy and The House Carpenter all appear. Note that the version of Tom Dooley uses a much more rapid tempo, and a substantially different tune, than the familiar hit by the Kingston Trio does. First formed in 1966, their first album, Sweeney's Men, was released in 1968 on Transatlantic Records with a lineup featuring Andy Irvine, Johnny Moynihan and Terry Woods. Irvine left in May 1968 going on to have a solo career and become a member of Planxty and Patrick Street amongst others and was replaced by Henry McCullough later of Wings, leaving Moynihan and Woods to record their second album, which Transatlantic released in 1969.
