Album

The Magic City is an album by the American jazz musician Sun Ra and his Solar Arkestra. Recorded in two sessions in 1965, the record was released on Ra's own Saturn label in 1966. The record was reissued by Impulse in 1973, and on compact disc by Evidence in 1993. It is part of the Penguin Guide's Core Collection of recommendations. It is notable especially for the title track, on which the Arkestra's range of feelings and sound is expressed in a design that's simply unprecedented in jazz. While it. Many enthusiasts and scholars consider this to be among Ra's most definitive studio recordings. Although the city in the album's title was thought to have been New York - where the disc was recorded - it is actually Ra's earthly birthplace of Birmingham, AL. I have never been a fan of Free Jazz (or space jazz when it comes to Sun ra.) I had never heard of Sun ra before, Nor have I heard the album when i placed the barely played LP on my turntable.Like i said, I dislike free jazz, and this is just downright crap to my ears. Lots of abstract sounds, terrible production, knocking noises while drums play out of tempo. (Probably something for you?)I'll be selling my almost "unplayed" Sun-Ra album. Keep an eye open.

Alot of Sun Ra music is about space and not time. This is a challenging album but rewarding for those who make the effort.

Sun Ra's discography covers a lot of jazz ground. I can understand why this LP might be a bit harsh for some people (it really is more of an avant classical release), but the big band bop of "Sun Song" or the percussion-heavy afro-exotica of "Angels And Demons at Play" are highly listenable for the jazz purist ("Call For All Demons" even appears in the infamous "Real Book" that jazz student rely on), so don't count Le Sony'r Ra out yet.

It takes a certain kind of person to buy something from a genre they know they don't like, by an artist they're completely unfamiliar with and know they probably don't like, and then trash it in a negative review as crap along with unconcealed judgment for followers of the artist and genre. Thanks for your "contribution."

Great album, very atmospheric and deep, one of Sun Ra's finest works, especially the title track on the A-side which reminds of a modern, atonal chamber symphony, dominated by futuristic flute sounds and echoing feedback effects from a microphone getting hit by a finger; later the saxophones join in and mess it all up, maybe even a bit too chaotic at the peak. Also the B-side features some good grooves, "Abstract Eye" with a wonderful deep cello or double bass, "Abstract 'I'" with a great dark and dreamy percussion, and "The Shadow World" with a fast, forward driving percussion and very wild saxophones. Unfortunately, my record (I own the Saturn reissue on 180 gram vinyl) is strictly MONO (at least the A-side, B is stereo), and I wonder if the Impulse-pressing is really stereo (like mentioned on the labels). Maybe someone here can answer this? Are there real stereo effects on this record? I suppose it would make a big difference since this album relies very much on its wide sound panorama...

Thank you for finally clearing that up! I hope you're still happy with your record, even if side 1 is mono.

Sunday 2nd April 2017:I just bought a copy of this 1973 Impulse-ABC pressing yesterday (at price-gouging, mob-filled, uncouth S.F. Amoeba Music sale of a jazz collector's hoard; note to self: avoid Amoeba from now on). Yes, Side 1 sounds mono. Shame, I think a Side 1 could benefit from a stereo mix.
