The Heliocentric Worlds of Sun Ra, Volume One is a 1965 album by the jazz musician Sun Ra. The back cover describes it as an album of compositions and arrangements by Sun Ra played by Sun Ra and his Solar Arkestra. The album is a notable example of the radical break which Sun Ra's music of that time had made with previous notions of melody or harmony. Done in the spring of 1965, it parallels many of the more important statements of the time, like John Coltrane's movement toward unabashed free jazz, the developed music of Ornette Coleman, emerging figures like Archie Shepp, Pharoah Sanders, and a fully flowered Albert Ayler. This is good in theory but his arrangements go into the realm of absurdity most of the time. Although, there are moments of brilliance but it is mainly of Sun Ras doing, not the other eleven members. They overlap themselves too frequently which creates a horrid atmosphere. The lack of song structures and the random keys detracts the replay value. The randomness is grating after a while as it forces squeaky and often annoying playing. As can be heard with the overlapping of the trumpet, percussion and what seems to b. To further delve into the heliocentric worlds of Sun Ra, each enhanced disc in the set contains archival photos, critical writings, and historical videos including the 18- minute documentary Spaceways. This album starts out sounding a lot like Stravinsky's Rites of Spring, then seems to want to be the score for a stab-happy Hitchcock movie, moving into a piece I SWEAR I heard on the original Planet of the Apes any or all of the originals, actually. Next we have a set that reminds me of yet another horror master, Dario Argento. This is not your conventional Jazz album, and I gather that's what contributes to Sun Ra's success
