The Grand Illusion is the seventh studio album by Styx. Recorded at Paragon Recording Studios in Chicago, the album was released on July 7, 1977. The release was a smash worldwide, selling three million copies in the US Triple Platinum alone. Some estimates have the album at over 5 million copies sold. Other than being their first platinum-selling album, The Grand Illusion led Styx steadfastly into the domain of AOR rock. Built on the strengths of Come Sail Away's ballad-to-rock metamorphosis, which gained them their second Top Ten hit, and on the high harmonies of newcomer Tommy Shaw throughout Fooling Yourself, The Grand Illusion introduced Styx to the gates of commercial stardom. Grand Illusion sallies forth with cuts that encompass the rage of heavy metal and the lugubrious smoothness of the progressive haze. The most dynamic song on the album, Miss America, simply reeks of misogynistic misdirection. What Styx thinks is a compliance with current feminist fashion turns out to be nothing more than a spiteful acquiescence to sexual bigotry and impotence. Styx better watch out because if Bert Parks ever heard this song hed send his legions of runners-up to stomp the group back into its Stygian depths. The rest of Grand Illusion maintains the same kind of musical imag. The Grand Illusion is the world as framed by the media. The song was written and sung by Styx keyboard player Dennis DeYoung, who told Songfacts: 'The Grand Illusion' was about, 'Look at us up here on this stage in these good lights. The title came from a 1937 film called La Grande Illusion by the French director Jean Renoir. After he saw it, Dennis DeYoung decided to write a song with the English translation: The Grand Illusion. For Styx, seven was the magic number. The Chicago AOR bands seventh album, The Grand Illusion, became the first of four consecutive triple- platinum albums that established Styx as one of Americas biggest rock acts.
