A collaborative effort, Ghosts Outside was recorded in early 2011 at Livingston Studios in North London with Dennis Bovell. Critic Score. You might think removing Mason for large swathes is a bit drastic, but then Ghosts Outside isnt a covers album. Wanting to experiment and advance the songs from his 2010 album Boys Outside, Mason looked up Bovell, and Ghosts Outside was born. 2011 release, a Dub reinterpretation of the British musician's Boys Outside album. Its not a meeting of two oppositional mindsets either. He is most widely known for his decades-spanning collaborations with Linton Kwesi Johnson. Dennis Bovell born 1953, Saint Peter, Barbados, West Indies is a reggae guitarist, bass player and record producer. He was a member of the British reggae band Matumbi, and released dub-reggae records under his own name as well as the pseudonym Blackbeard. Such wizardry was once the preserve of the reggae producer, and Dennis Bovell a legendary figure on the UK scene is still employing his old tricks on this reworking of Steve Mason's album Boys Outside: there's skanking piano, some chicken-scratch guitar, great stabs of horns and echo effects everywhere. Using the original tracks as a basis, with Steve's guidance, Dennis added additional instrumentation the tracks were later given the classic Bovell production treatment. Even in the form of snippets, Masons melodies are strong enough to survive. Mason has also worked under the name Black Affair, and has released one album under this pseudonym on V2 Records.
