First: Location, Location, Location

Carefully choose the stencils location. Stencil graffiti, like a tattoo, is a piece of art. Place it where it can be seen and where it can impact the greatest number of people. John Fekners signature stencil read Wheels Over Indian Trails" in simple, solid black lettering. It was the stencils location that garnered attention. Fekner placed it on New Yorks Pulaski Bridge near the Midtown Tunnel for maximum effect. In fact, the stencil remained intact for 11 years until Fekner himself painted over it.

While not every piece of graffiti enjoys such a long lifespan, artists should consider the placement of their work, both in terms of scale and in terms of outcome.

What is the motivation behind the stencil? Is it meant to amuse or shock? Does it make a political, social or environmental statement? Does it educate, entertain, or both?

Back when graffiti stenciling was still in its infancy and it certainly hadn't hit the hallowed halls of a liberal arts college, a most amazing and thought-provoking group of stencils appeared on campus overnight. At first, it seemed as though a mass-murderer had exceeded his goal in terms of body count. However, it soon became apparent that these chalk-outline bodies simply expired in the act of "whatever". One body had its books scattered around it; another was carrying a flower. Some of the bodies were human; others were birds, cats, dogs, squirrels. And all had perished on the fifth anniversary of the nuclear incident at Three Mile Island.

The Stencil themselves were simple chalk outlines. The placement was well-thought. The impact was stunning.

The artists motivation was to shock the pampered middle-class students out of complacently accepting nuclear energy and shock them into considering the possible consequences of a nuclear meltdown. The scale included the entire campus so that every student would wander across at least one casualty.

Second: Choose a Subject

A graffiti artists work is his personal signature. Choose an image that will uniquely convey the message, and spend time translating that image into a stencil.

For example, to protest an abundance of abandoned school buildings due to declining urban population and school consolidation, one could choose to stencil a number of famous Norman Rockwell school scenes on the empty school buildings. Norman Rockwell, though not fond of his own school days, became the portraitist of all that worked well in American life in the early 1900s. In particular, his After School" features a young boy writing Knowledge is Power" on the chalkboard. Judging from the time on the clock, the presence of the school teacher and the number of times the lad had written Knowledge is Power," it is clear that this after-school punishment was intended to stress the importance of education to the recalcitrant youth.

Third: Create a Template

The complexity of the template is dependent upon the skill of the artist, the scale of the final piece and the level of detail he wishes to achieve. Some artists can simply look at a picture and free-hand draw it to scale. Other artists may need to enlarge or reduce the original work.

The easiest and, in the long-term, probably the cheapest way to convert original artwork into a stencil is to pick up an old overhead projector from an office products store. Copy the original image in black and white onto a clear overhead sheet (a few pennies per sheet, and a few pennies to create a photocopy). Project the image onto a blank wall, adjusting the focus and moving the machine until the image is the proper size and clarity.

Choose the stencil material based on the complexity of the design and the type of paint that will be used. Thick materials such as cardboard or foam board are excellent choices for large blocks of color with little detail and for fast-drying paints. The downside is that the thicker the board, the more difficult it is to cut it with any degree of precision. It is also a little trickier to ensure that thick materials adhere firmly to the stenciling surface. Without this consistent contact, the paint will run through the unfastened portions of the stencil or bleed through the edges.

After School" is a fairly detailed stencil, even when simplified down to the child, the blackboard, and the handwritten message. Therefore, the artist should choose a thin stencil material in order to create the required detail. Indus
