Cult of Static. by Alex Young. on April 07, 2009, 1:50pm. For years, fans have watched Static-X trudge past the classic Wisconsin Death Trip up through various soundtrack spots, from Queen Of The Damned to Punisher: War Zone - yet after all this time, their style has hardly changed. Heads continue to roll with the groups sixth album, Cult of Static, but not in the way these Californians intended. Simply put, Cult of Static is a mess. Static X's sixth album, Cult of Static, finds the nu-metal veterans steadfastly refusing to change their stripes, and why should they As they say in the album's title, Static X have a cult that enjoys their adherence to all things that were nu in the '90s: riffs that grind instead of groove, merciless mechanical rhythms, vague drowning synths, all dressed with barking Cookie Monster vocals. Static X don't develop their music as much as they hone it, concentrating on its barest essentials, then delivering it with precision and little flair. This leaves little room to lure n. Wayne Static himself clouds the dance metal practices of the group even further by devolving into David Draimans Disturbed twin brother of barking vocal techniques. It is of course no surprise, but the question was, when it was going to happen. Furthermore, his depiction of a self-following cult adds unnecessary amounts of pomposity to the package. If Static truly thinks his following will multiply after such a poor release, then he should be turning to Nikola Teslas cult-worthy eccentricities for some true electrical inspiration to power a dwindling mindset.
