Unlike most of the related collaborations, this album doesn't spend a huge amount of effort on the Eastern end of affairs. Paban das Baul is, of course, featured quite heavily in the proceedings, but in general he works himself into the compositions that the State of Bengal aka Sam Zaman is laying out. As such, the result is something of a chill out album, with a heavy bass line throughout much of its course. Paban Das Baul born 1961 is a noted Baul singer and musician from India, who also plays a dubki, a small tambourine and sometimes an ektara as an accompaniment. Their collaboration resulted in the acclaimed album Real Sugar 1997, a Peter Gabriel's Real World Records release, it marked one of the first fusions of Bengali music and Western pop music. He has also collaborated with the London-based State of Bengal and Susheela Raman. In 2005, the Baul tradition was included in the list of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Inner Knowledge Womad Select - 1997. It's Zaman's gigantic rhythm tracks that form much of the musical muscle, taking a drum 'n' bass format as their starting point, even though this is frequently settled down into a calmer manifestation. Guest players include Marque Gilmore specialising in real-drumkit breakbeats and Asian Dub Foundation's bassist Dr. Zaman encouraged Paban to write his own words, determined to stretch him into unfamiliar position.
