The Stanford prison experiment SPE was a social psychology experiment that attempted to investigate the psychological effects of perceived power, focusing on the struggle between prisoners and prison officers. It was conducted at Stanford University on the days of August 1420, 1971 by a research group led by psychology professor Philip Zimbardo using college students. In the study, volunteers were assigned to be either guards or prisoners by the flip of a coin, in a mock prison, with Zimbardo. Welcome to the official Stanford Prison Experiment website, which features extensive information about a classic psychology experiment that inspired an award-winning movie, New York Times bestseller, and documentary DVD. What happens when you put good people in an evil place Does humanity win over evil, or does evil triumph These are some of the questions we posed in this dramatic simulation of prison life conducted in 1971 at stanford university. How we went about testing these questions and what we found may astound you. The Stanford Prison Experiment - Andrew Hewitt. In 1971, twenty-four male students are selected to take on randomly assigned roles of prisoners and guards in a mock prison situated in the basement of the Stanford psychology building. Director: Kyle Patrick Alvarez. Plot Summary Plot Synopsis. The Stanford Prison Experiment is one of the most famous experiments in psychology's history. Learn more about the experiment and the results. In 1971, psychologist Philip Zimbardo and his colleagues set out to create an experiment that looked at the impact of becoming a prisoner or prison guard. Known as the Stanford Prison Experiment, the study went on to become one of the best-known in psychology's history. Zimbardo, a former classmate of Stanley Milgram who is best known for his famous obedience experiment, was interested in expanding upon Milgram's research. He wanted to investigate further the impact of situational variables on human behavior. Stanford Prison Experiment is one of those rare bands that can use a conventional sound with unconventional skill. While most of the band's self-titled album concentrates on riff-heavy alt rock, its composition is tight, direct, and likeable enough to overshoot whatever limitations the genre may impose. Things get even better on tracks like Written Apology, when the band uses its rather standard constructions to more melodic effect. Over a record filled with similarly effective turns, Stanford Prison Experiment proves itself as semi-great band in a well-worn vein of rock. Stanford Prison Experiment, a social psychology study 1971 in which college students became prisoners or guards in a simulated prison environment. Intended to measure the effect of role-playing, labeling, and social expectations on behavior, the experiment ended after six days due to the mistreatment of prisoners. Stanford Prison ExperimentA guard frisking a prisoner during the Stanford Prison Experiment, 1971. More than 70 young men responded to an advertisement about a psychological study of prison life, and experimenters selected 24 applicants who were judged to be physically and mentally healthy. This infamous Stanford Prison Experiment has etched its place in history, as a notorious example of the unexpected effects that can occur when psychological experiments into human nature are performed.
