Formed in the early 1960s, the group is one of the main exponents of Chilean cumbia and were pioneers of the style. They were the first Chilean band to record cumbia and are widely recognized for establishing the popularity of cumbia in Chile. In the 1950s, tropical music was very popular among Chileans. Then came the 1960s, a time of great change in the music scene. Along with rock and roll from the US, cumbia style from the Caribbean came. Initially known as Septeto Soprano, this Cuban group, created in 1924, adapted its name to La Sonora Matancera in 1932. From 1949 to 1950, Myrta Silva . La Gorda De Oro was the lead singer in this legendary Cuban salsa-group. Later, on August 3, 1950, Celia Cruz replaced Myrta Silva, who had returned to her native Puerto Rico. Celia Cruz left the group in 1965 only to be re-united 17 years later at a concert at Madison Square Gardens as a tribute to her. Las Tres Marias, Las Tres Marías.
