NYC Ghosts & Flowers is the eleventh studio album by American rock band Sonic Youth, released on May 16, 2000 by DGC Records. The highly experimental album is considered to be a reaction to the theft of the band's instruments in July 1999, when several irreplaceable guitars and effects pedals were stolen. NYC Ghosts & Flowers was the first album since Bad Moon Rising in which the band used prepared guitar. However, landmarks like NYC Ghosts & Flowers refocus our dislike with greater alacrity. Sonic Youth's umpteenth album wads everything we hate about New York into one convenient tissue. The only thing missing is the Mets. Sonic Youth remind us that white New Yorkers still grow soul-patches and goatees, wear berets and Rastafarian caps, dine on grilled tofu in an emulsification of goat butter and kumquat, and watch Dutch documentaries about fisting, thinking it's original, intellectual, or influential. Sounding a little affected and like a spoilt kid in parts, if you know what I mean. Sonic Youth redeam themselves later on with the Sonic Nurse album, but this is start of the slide I feel. NYC Ghosts & Flowers Sonic Youth. a tragedy struck Sonic youth on July 3rd of 1999: a large amount of customized, nearly irreplacable guitars, basses, amplifiers, and effects pedals were stolen with a Ryder truck of theirs. The truck was found empty a few days later, thus forcing the band to borrow and purchase a new set of equipment to use for following shows and so on. When back in the studio, Sonic Youth decided to go back to their older studio equipment that they had not taken with them. If there was one album to liken NYC Ghosts & Flowers to, it would be Sonic Youth's most recent studio effort SYR4: Goodbye 20th Centtury. NYC Ghosts & Flowers is the 11th studio album by noise rock band Sonic Youth.
