Regardless, this is a very enjoyable if not essential album of traditional African highlife music set to dance tempos. Fans of Count Ossie or other Pan-African musics that predate an outright American R&B influence should know what to expect here. In other words, it doesn't sound as modern as Fela Kuti, so it won't supply the kinds of grooves expected on most dancefloors. From the album African High Life Blue Note, 1964. Prayer by Solomon G. The Nigerian-born Ilori arrived in the US in the late '50s and recorded the first six tracks on this album-the original African High Life release-in 1963. They're pleasant, if unspectacular, palm-wine highlife outings from the West African tradition, distinguished by some masterful drumming, but diminished by strangely inept alto saxophone contributions. Saxophonist Hosea Taylor is more convincing on flute, but even here, he's eclipsed by Ilori's pennywhistle, winningly showcased on the Irish sea shanty-derived Follow Me To Africa.
