The song, released as the b-side to the band's 1970 single Thank You Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin, reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 1970 at a time when chart position for both sides of the single were measured equally and not independently. Everybody Is a Star was released as a single together with Thank You Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin in December of 69. Together with Hot Fun in the Summertime , Star and Thank You were recorded for an album that was never finished. Because of this, the three saw the light of day for the first time when they were released on the compilation album Greatest Hits. In 1970 Star and Thank You topped the Billboard Hot 100 in the weeks of 14 and 21 February and the Billboard Soul chart in the weeks of 7, 14, 21 and 28 February. The single was certified gold by the RIAA on February 9th, 19. Sly & the Family Stone are finishing up Sex Machine now the studio is darkened, and only Greg Hand Feet Errico, the drummer, is at work, pounding out the final drum solo. With a headset strapped on and eyes closed, Greg has finished piledriving and slowed down to a plod. Slowly, a heavy door is pushed open, and in sneak all the other members of the Family, up behind Greg.
