Holy Mountain In 2011, Southern Lord was contacted by Sleeps Al Cisneros about the possibility of releasing a deluxe version of the classic Sleep recording: Dopesmoker. The Lord version features brand new artwork by long time Sleep artist, Arik Roper, who created something specifically special for the albums rebirth. The biggest difference between this new version and the old releases is the phenomenal remastering job by Brad Boatright. His vision was to enhance the original recording without changing it drastically. Produced by both the band and Billy Anderson, the album went through problems with their label London Records who refused to release the album, which ran for over an hour and consisted of just one song, as the band intended which led to the album being released in a truncated format years later. At the time of it's release, the band had long since broken up. Dopesmoker failed to reach any Billboard charts and wasn't reviewed by many popular music critics, although it received ver read more. The Sleep album Dopesmoker consists of a single, 63 minute song, written by the band over the course of 4 years during the mid 90s. The bands epic struggles to have it recorded and released between 1995, when they were first ready to record, and 2012, when the 3rd and final version was released, are legendary. Despite being rejected numerous times by record labels, Dopesmoker was highly critically acclaimed, and is now considered a touchstone of stoner metal and doom metal. Dopesmoker had been presumed to be Sleeps final album for over a decade before the release of The Sciences on 42018. When Sleep broke up after the failure of Dopesmoker, the trio split into two unequal halves: Almost immediately, Matt Pike started High on Fire, who have continued adding different kinds of fuel to the same generalized burn. Years later, Hakius and Cisneros would return as Om to explore the same iterative modalities that made listening to Dopesmoker feel like an instant inhalation. Dopesmoker is the perfect culmination before the collapse Pike's bombast meet Om's repetition, a friction that rendered ideal sparks. Jerusalem and Dopesmoker are two versions of the third album by the American heavy metal band Sleep. The albums were released in 1999 and 2003 respectively. The music for these albums was written during a four-year period when the group was working on a single song that was around an hour in length.
