Album
Simon H. Fell born 13 January 1959, Dewsbury, Yorkshire, England is a bassist and composer he is primarily known for his work as a free improviser and the composer of ambitiously complex post-serialist works. Fell began playing double bass in 1973. From 1978 to 1981 he read English Literature at Fitzwilliam College of Cambridge University, an interest that led to ties to many of the poets associated with the Cambridge scene a later work, Music for 100, involves settings of texts by the poet. Fell's music, especially his compositions, always require several listens before revealing all of their intricacies and features. Some listeners see it as preciousness others as depth and intelligence. Four Compositions, in that regard, is no different from the previous SFQ release or the Compilation series: if you make the effort to track it down, you might as well make the effort to unlock its mysteries. Track Listing. Fell studied double bass under Peter Leah at Batley Grammar School and Huddersfield Polytechnic. By the age of 16 he was playing professionally, accompanying some of the world's most renowned cabaret performers at the legendary Batley Variety Club. He received his M. from Cambridge University in 1984, having studied at Fitzwilliam College. Seven Compositions Limoges - SFQ. Probably the best of my large ensemble adventures to be released on BF but check out 'Positions & Descriptions' too - every time I listen to this I'm reminded of things I can't believe I did. Sfq: Four Compositions. Composition and structure, improvisation and the use of space, time gathered and broken down, music notated and musicians given the leeway to go beyond. Fell makes use of these and other concepts like the works of Pierre Boulez. The two discs that comprise this double set by SFQ aka the Simon Fell QuartetQuintet are different in their evolution and resolution. The first is more abstract, making greater use of space-some of which is left empty, or filled by silence if you will. Bassist Simon Fell presents two SFQ projects, Three Quintets with Alex Ward clarinet, Gail Brand trombone, Alex Maguire piano and Steve Noble drums and the Liverpool Quartet with Alex Ward, Guy Llewellyn french horn and Mark Sanders drums & electronics. Price: . He also currently leads a number of bands including Predicate, Forebrace, The Alex Ward QuintetSextet, and Alex Ward & The Dead Ends. He has been a member of many other groups including ensembles led by Eugene Chadbourne, Simon H. Fell and Duck Baker, and has also done various work as a session musician and in collaboration with other media. Fell Composer, bassist, guitarist Source for information on Fell, Simon H.
