I have listened to a dozen versions of Shostakovich's Symphony No. I particularly like this one, as well as the version by Bernard Haitink leading the Concertgebouw Orchestra, and the older but very famous version by Leonard Bernstein. None is perfect, probably because of Shostakovich's proclivity for concealing his real musical intentions, and I am still awaiting the perfect rendition. The version by Ashkenazy is excellent but a little hesitant, especially in the 4th movement.
