The second collection from the unlikely dynamic duo of actress Zooey Deschanel and indie-rock sensation M. Ward continues in the mode of the first volume with Deschanels girl-group pop voice being framed as if she were starring in a Phil Spector-produced musical. Its an odd sensation where the sound deliberately dates itself back to the early 60s yet sounds inscrutably timeless as the handclaps and vocal interplay suggest a love for pop music that cant be easily dismissed. She & Him are great at establishing the mood and feel of this album. It has a classical feel, while still sounding current, and it still knows how to maintain its charm throughout the whole project. But still, if I had a criticism, it would be that the album has an extreme lack of variety. But though the case may be, the album does it perfectly. ZD brought these beautiful songs to Volume 2 and Ward produced and I imagine mostly arranged this perfect summertime record. You could make a lot of these arrangements, because it's all there the Orbison crescendo on Thieves, the Pet Sounds break on Don't Look Back, Leiber and Stoller on Lingering Still. With She & Him's Volume One, her first collaboration with M. Ward, she proved that not only could she act, write songs, and sing, but she could do them all very well, with a sparkle of personality glinting in those big eyes and bigger voice. Volume Two picks up almost exactly where Volume One left off, with Deschanel still playing a smart, sensitive young woman often on the unrequited end of love but never letting romantic disappointment get her down: Sometimes lonely isn't sad, she declares on the stately opener Thieves.
