The title track to their debut album in early 1977, Shalamar's tribute to the great R&B hits of yesteryear was not unlike the Ritchie Family's hit the free to Shalamar Uptown Festival Part 1 & 2. The album was in fact recorded by session singers. It peaked at 22 on the US R&B chart and 48 on the Billboard Albums chart. The title track, Uptown Festival, was recorded at Ike & Tina Turner's Bolic Sound studio. It's a medley of ten Motown classics sung over a 1970s disco beat. The first three records from the R&B group that came out of Soul Train show their evolution from a schmaltzy cash-grab to a bona fide bringer of disco joy. This somewhat crass marketing tactic led to the Shalamar experiments first release, 1977s Uptown Festival. Using session singers to get the album out quickly, Festival is a naked cash grab posing as a fully-formed concept. Save for the title track-a medley of familiar Motown standards laid over a disco beat-the record is completely forgettable unless used as a marketing case study and doesnt have a ton of replayability. However, just because the album wasnt good doesnt mean that album wasnt successful. Shalamar's debut album Uptown Festival is a dated set of shamelessly pandering disco that became a hit on the basis of the title track, a clever medley of old Motown hits. Uptown Festival - and its less-successful followup, a cover of Smokey Robinson's Ooh Baby Baby - were hits simply because they grafted a familiar melody to a disco beat, not because they represented any innovation. The remainder of Uptown Festival suffers from a similar fate. Shalamar sing as if the lyrics met something, but the music on the record is so stilted, the album sounds lifeless.
