The Wake of Magellan is the tenth studio album released by the American heavy metal band Savatage. The album was released in September 1997 in Europe and Japan, and in April 1998 in the US. This is the first Savatage album to have the same line up as the previous album since Hall of the Mountain King in 1987 and also the last to feature vocals from lead singer Zachary Stevens. Employing a fictional character, Hector Del-Fuego Magellan, a supposed descendent of famed explorer Ferdinand Magellan, the band retells two true stories. The first occurred less than a year before this album was released when the captain of a freighter threw three Romanian stowaways overboard in the middle of the Atlantic. A fourth stowaway was saved by the courageous action of a deckhand who risked his own life to protect the youth. The second event regarded the Irish reporter Veronica Guerin who died fighting the growth of the drug trade in her country. Her death may accomplish what she could not in life. The Wake Of Magellan is a very unique rock opera, in that it is composed around to songs that were not only written before the albums concept was conceived of, but are about two topics that are only similar in the broadest sense. In the hands of most bands, this kind of incongruity could result in a mishmash of an album a ham-fisted portrayal of something that required a delicate touch. At its essence, it is a story of longing, finality, and justice or lack thereof, told through the eyes of an aged Spanish sailor, who claims to be a direct descendent of the great Portuguese explorer, Ferdi.
