Signals is the ninth studio album by Canadian rock band Rush, released in September 1982 by Anthem Records. After the release of their previous album, Moving Pictures, the band started to prepare material for a follow-up during soundchecks on their 1981 concert tour and during the mixing of their subsequent live album Left. Signals demonstrates the group continuing with the use of synthesizers, sequencers, and other electronic instrumentation. It is their last album produced by their. Signals is the bands ninth studio album, released in 1982. It was the follow-up to the what would become seminal Moving Pictures album. Stylistically, the album was a continuation of Rushs foray into the technology-oriented 1980s through increased use of electronic instrumentation such as keyboards, sequencers, and electric violin. The songs got shorter too. In fact, New World Man clocked in at a swift 3:42it was the last and quickest-composed song on the album, written primarily to even out the lengths of the two sides of the cassette version. The opening track, Subdivisions, is a st. Signals is the ninth studio album by the Canadian rock band Rush, released September 9, 1982. II, Rush replaced their heavy rock of yesteryear with even more modern sounds for 1982's Signals. Synthesizers were now an integral part of the band's sound, and replaced electric guitars as the driving force for almost all the tracks. And more current and easier-to-grasp topics teen peer pressure, repression, etc. replaced their trusty old sci-fi-inspired lyrics. On their twelfth album, Rush makes a strong argument for the view that advanced technology is not necessarily the same thing as progress. Unfortunately, they do so largely by screwing up. Although Signals is chockablock with state-of-the-studio gadgetry, ranging from the requisite banks of synthesizers to the latest in digital recording and mixing, none of these electronic add-ons enhances the groups music. If anything, Rush emerges from this jungle of wires and gizmos sounding duller than ever. Even so, its mostly a wasted effort, and nearly all of Rushs Signals come across as static. The band's lineup included vocalist, bassist, and synthesizers player Geddy Lee, guitarist Alex Lifeson, and drummer Neil Peart. Rush's previous release Moving Pictures marked a shift musically to a more mainstream approach with more electronic instrumentation. Signals is an album that still has some great tracks, but is Rush's first release in years to feel not well balanced musically. Signals was another popular release as it reached 10 on the Billboard 200 chart and 3 on the UK albums chart.
