After finishing touring for its previous album, Caress of Steel, in early 1976, the band was in financial hardship due to the album's disappointing sales, unfavorable critical reception, and a decline in attendance at its shows. The band's international label, Mercury Records, considered dropping Rush but granted the band. Rush made more-popular records, more-succinct records, but 2112 newly reissued in expanded form is their most extreme, grandiose and Rush-like record, and thus their greatest the definitive 20 minutes and 34 seconds of the Rush worldview plus five extra songs on Side Two, which nobody has ever played twice. It might have made sense to reissue 2112 a year ago, so everyone could drunkenly download it on New Years Eve. But that would have been obvious and predictable, which isnt Rushs style. The deluxe version of 2112 features remastered music although, philosophically speaking, not mastered at all. 2112 was also Rushs first platinum album in Canada, spawning a now-legendary Canadian tour that culminated in a three-night stand at Massey Hall in Toronto, which was recorded for Rushs first live album, All the Worlds a Stage. 2112 is one of two Rush albums listed in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, and it ranked second on Rolling Stones 2012 readers poll of Your Favorite Prog Rock Albums of All Time.
