"Thunder of Spring Over Distant Mountains" is the first portion of a trilogy of compositions exploring musical acculturation. Originally composed as a quadratic tape piece in the Yale Electronic Music Studio, which Robert Morris directed from 1972-1977, "Thunder" is presented here for the first time in a stereo mixdown on compact disk. Seven pieces of Southeast and East Asian music, taken as source material for the work, are subjected to varying degrees of electronic modification.

Robert Morris, born in Cheltenham, England in 1943, received his musical education at the Eastman School of Music B. in composition with distinction and the University of Michigan M. and . in composition and ethnomusicology, where he studied composition with John La Montaigne, Leslie Bassett, Ross Lee Finney, and Eugene Kurtz.
