The Baltimore-born virtuoso became part of the legacy around the label Takoma Records and their coining of the genre American primitivism in the 1960s, fusing Indian traditions with US-American folk. The lesser known Art of the Acoustic Steel String Guitar 6 & 12 was his second album for Windham Hill and is considered his magnum opus of solo guitar.
