Tuba Ray Draper. Bass Spansky Debrest. Raymond Allen Draper August 3, 1940, New York City November 1, 1982 was an American jazz tuba player. Draper was born in New York City and attended the Manhattan School of Music in the mid-1950s. As a leader, he recorded his first album, Tuba Sounds Prestige 1957, at the age of 16, with a quintet. His second album, The Ray Draper Quintet featuring John Coltrane, was recorded at the age of 17 with slight changes in his quintet, including John Coltrane. Ray Draper was an excellent tuba soloist, one of the few in the 1950s to utilize the instrument for bop improvisations. After attending the Manhattan School of Music, he played and recorded with Jackie McLean 1956-1957, worked with Donald Byrd, and recorded with John Coltrane 1958. This one, a session originally on Jubilee called A TUBA JAZZ, under Draper's name, I first heard on a Trip label budget LP in the 1970's under John Coltrane's name, called TRANE TRACKS. Obviously, with a tuba in the lead, one must choose a repertoire that works for the instrument, and Draper does just that. His blurry tuba sound reminds me somewhat of the trombone playing of Kid Ory, especially Ory's 50s record.
