By 1972's A MESSAGE FROM THE PEOPLE, he was turning out tracks full of funky soul, largely devoid of the overproduction plaguing much of his ABC discography. As was so often the case with Ray, a gospel feel mixed with R&B locomotion is the engine that drives things here, but he also uses it to transform Melanie's What Have They Done to My Song, Ma into a syncopated strut, and bring a Sunday Baptist church feel to the Dion hit Abraham, Martin and John. A Message from the People is more totally Ray Charles than any album he has ever recorded. The flicker of an idea was nurtured. Soon it became a compulsion. This is a great album, not only in execution and Charles' incredible musicianship, but also makes a great statement to, and for, all of us. The Message From The People is still applicable today, and it's exhilarating to hear a Master Artist speak so well on our behalf. Read more. Ray Charles is the first release on LP by American pianist, vocalist, and band leader Ray Charles. Originally released in 1957 on Atlantic Records, it was re-released as Hallelujah I Love Her So in 1962. Many of the tracks had been hit singles for Ray Charles in the preceding years, notably Mess Around in 1953, A Fool for You and I Got A Woman in 1955, Drown In My Own Tears and Hallelujah I Love Her So in 1956.
