Ram Narayan IPA: born 25 December 1927, often referred to with the title Pandit, is an Indian musician who popularised the bowed instrument sarangi as a solo concert instrument in Hindustani classical music and became the first internationally successful sarangi player. Narayan was born near Udaipur and learned to play the sarangi at an early age. He studied under sarangi players and singers and, as a teenager, worked as a music teacher and travelling musician. The sarangi is a North Indian string instrument that has a violin-like sound, and Narayan plays it with a tremendous amount of feeling on this album. Recorded live in Stockholm in 1974, this album originally came out as the Amigo LP Raga Puria-Kalyan and was reissued on CD as simply Pandit Ram Narayan in 1999. The album consists solely of the extended raga Raga Puria-Kalyan, which Narayan uses a vehicle for some passionate, soul-bearing introspection.
